I write this review with a heavy heart.

I am very much a Paradox fan. Having fully bought all there is to from hoi4, and having bought stellaris I thought VIC 3 might also be a great game to pickup.

Oh how wrong I was.

Let me first start out by stating the following:
Yes , I am aware that paradox games require time understand (sometimes even comprehend)
Yes , I am willing to devote time to this and am willing to fail in order to learn from my mistakes
Yes , I gave VIC 3 a fair chance.

Now, the first set of problems:
I have no idea what I am doing. Now I hear you thinking: But you stated- SHUSH . I have no idea what I am doing, and it is not because I did not try. Jumping into the game I was kinda expecting that things would not go smoothly, but I wanted to learn as much as possible as quick as possible. Simply put, I couldn't. VIC is like a spiderweb of variables; everything is attached to everything else, and everything changes everything else. And I wouldn't mind that if it wasn't for the fact that you don't know where the hell everything is connected to.

For instance: Radicalism!
The pain and suffering I have had to try and understand, let alone "fix" radicalism. Every single game:
  1. I boot up
  2. Try something new to slow down Radicalism
  3. Faill for some reason (Never have a clue what that reason is, it just fails)
  4. Have civil war or threats of civil war every second
  5. Quit
Now I understand that the game is rather complex, and so is the economy. I have doven into 4 different guides and there is still much to learn! This is a good thing, that means the skill ceiling is high, and knowing more rewards better... BUT
This whole time, I have tried my very best to become better, to change something, to learn from.. ANYTHING. But it doesn't matter. SOL collapses everywhere in my country and the run will be ruined (again)

The point I am trying to make here, there is no problem in having to learn, adapt, and become better in a game. But this game just has too much going on which affects too many things. I am still very bad at Stellaris, but at least when I fail at something I can go "Oh, damn. I should have prepared better for that.", or "Next time, I will research this first so I can grow faster". Learning grants rewards. I can see myself getting better. I can learn from my mistakes.
And in VIC? Forget about it. The only thing I have truly learned in the 43 hours of gameplay is 1.5 hours of guides... Is well nothing . Everything I learned from guides was nearly impossible to properly use in-game.

I am skipping the army nonsense, it is trash. But it is doable, and one of the only things I have seen myself learn from mistakes.

In conclusion:
The game has a lot of potential, but it just feels like it is all over the place and WAY too punishing for anything you do incorrectly. There is no problem with punishing the player when they do something incorrectly (it allows them to learn from their mistakes). But giving me a full-on civil war where the enemy has a 3:1 army ratio Because of a reason I can't understand.. Then the game becomes a pain to play, not a learning experience.
All in all, maybe Paradox will fix this eventually. But right now, only dive in once you have memorized the entire VIC 3 Wikipedia. Because you won't last otherwise
