Tyrannosaurus rex was first described in scientific literature by Henry Fairfield Osborn in 1905, since then, it has risen to become the most popular of all extinct life, let alone dinosaurs, likely due to the blockbuster movie “Jurassic Park (1993) and the many sequels that followed. It also has the most popular binominal scientific name, as Robert T. Bakker describes Tyrannosaurus rex as “irresistable to the tongue”. Edward Drinker Cope described the name “Manospondylus gigas” in 1892 to describe 2 vertebrae. However, the holotype of Tyrannosaurus rex was discovered over a decade later, and due to the close proximity in time and location and similarities in the vertebrae, Manospondylus and Tyrannosaurus were realised to be the same animal. However, in the end the name Tyrannosaurus was chosen over “Manospondylus” as the holotype of Tyrannosaurus was far more complete, with “Manospondylus” being left an obsolete name, or nomen oblitum. Tyrannosaurus likely evolved from the asian relative Tarbosaurus around 70 million years ago, migrating into North America from the middle of China, the Mongolian Tarbosaurus would still persist throughought the existance of its American decendant Tyrannosaurus until the very end. Tyrannosaurus was the largest land carnivore to ever live, being 12 meters long and weighing in at 11 tonnes. The already monstrous Tyrannosaurus was also equipped with a bite force of up to 431,342 PSI, equivalent to that of 16 lions. Tyrannosaurus was truly a formidable predator, the iconic “King of the Dinosaurs”. The existance of Tyrannosaurus was tragically cut short around 65.8 million years ago, when a giant lump of rock from outer space slammed into the Gulf of Mexico, killing most of the dinosaurs and forever putting an end to the age of reptiles. The mighty Tyrannosaurus is now confined to our museums, capturing the awe and imagination of all who see its spectacularly fossilised bones.
