---
On a dark winterās night, a child signs a contract with a man dead to the world.
Promised an upbringing filled with forbidden knowledge, the two enter a strange and isolated existence together.
After nineteen years, the sanctuary and prison you have come to know as your home is discovered, and the land finally learns that the villain they believed to have perished a century prior has merely been in hiding…and that he isnāt alone.
Separated and forced to flee, youāre once again released into the world without your masterās hand to guide you. Only now, he is no longer the only one adept at the unsanctioned arcane arts.
āUnsanctionedā is a 183k word 18+ interactive novel where you play as the apprentice of an ostracized sorcerer. Itās set in a dark fantasy world where magic is simultaneously a symbol of status and strictly supervised.
The demo currently covers the first part of the prologue, which features three different backgrounds to choose from, the second part of the prologue and the beginning of chapter one.

⢠Three backgrounds to choose from which will shape your MC and their relationship with the world, impact their pool of knowledge, their countenance, and how others might react to them.
⢠Three races to choose from: elf, human or the shunned cryn.
⢠A complicated parental relationship at the heart of the narrative.
⢠A cast of potential ā and not entirely lawful ā companions who you can forge various relationships with.
⢠Around five full-fledged romances, along with casual flings you may try to pursue along the way.
⢠Choices that shape your MCās personality as well as the world around them to a lesser or bigger degree and narrative branching based on certain choices.
⢠A game of truth and deceit with you as one of the main players. You've been taught to keep your identity and abilities a secret from others, but is secrecy what you truly want?
⢠A magic system of both legal and illegal spells at your disposal. Use them wisely, or you might attract unwanted attention...

Cirern Avari (elven). If the stories are to be trusted, he is the last surviving member of the group of sorcerers unceremoniously named the āPentagon orderā. He is your master and your caretaker, your mentor and your jailor.
Knowledgeable and lonesome, he often seems to be pondering the world which he has now become a reclused observer of. When you first meet him, he is calm and distant, impatient and thoughtful.
Whether you consider him family or a brute who took you away from the life you were meant to live, it canāt be argued that the nineteen years the two of you have spent together has shaped you into the person you are today.
How your presence has affected him, you cannot confidently say. His mind remains as closed off to you now as it did on that snowy winterās night so long ago.
Perhaps leaving his side is what will finally allow you to learn the truth about him.

Muir (Romance Option, ???). As a being born from the very essence of sorcery, Muirās existence threads a thin line between mortality and something wholly other. All spellweavers rely on the energy of their magiramĆŗs to cast their spells; you rely on this hoary eyed young man to do the same. Aside from his direct and stubborn disposition, he possesses both a palpable kindness and a sense of unmotivated ruthlessness. When you first meet him, he is a dreamy child with curious eyes that seem to hold the universe itself. But as Muir settles into his skin those qualities begin to dim, and his strange sense of wonder turns into awkwardness and uncertainty, eventually hardening him into a stoic and quiet adult.
You donāt know what he is, yet you know him better than anyone. You left your home together; now you must learn to navigate the world together.
Something thatās much easier said than done when your very existence marks you as outlaws.

Wren Parr (Romance Option, elven). One need only look at Wren to know that theyāre an agent of the Institute of Arcane Arts. If the robes didnāt give it away, their demeanour certainly would. Arrogance lies deeply embedded in their eyes, and they seem convinced that anyone who looks their way does so with envy. Beneath the exterior they present is a deeply passionate - and occasionally awkward - person.
When you encounter them in the troubled town of Kelmerth during their Practice of Passing, you get to witness firsthand what a student of the most distinguished academy on the continent can do, and what being a product of its teachings really means.

Azora (Romance Option, human). Hailing from the southern land of Ciralor, one of the few human-ruled countries on the continent, Azora is less attuned to the laws of the arcane than a native of AĆos would be. Instead, she tends to rely on the inventions her homeland is both renowned and feared for. She is eloquent and straight-forward and impulsive to a fault ā but it is all, according to her, to reclaim her rightful place as Ciralorās leader. A task that proves difficult when every day is a battle to stay in control of her own body.

Astra (Romance Option, vampiric, formerly human). Astra's gaze always appears to wander, searching for something in the crowds she often surrounds herself with, occasionally locking on to someone who just so happens to catch her interest. Although her muscular stature points to a life of strife, the poise she displays is more befitting of a high born than that of a common thug. Astra can be described as having little regard for mortal lives, and itās not beyond her to manipulate and scheme to nudge things in the direction she wants them to go. Sometimes that means feasting on the blood of the unsuspecting, and sometimes that is extended to a grander vision and goal. Although she can be cruel, she is also fiercely loyal to those sheās close with and trusts. Beneath her exterior, something darker and more unpredictable simmers, though she rarely allows that side of her to show.
As a vampire, she has little choice but to shun the light of day and seek the comfort that lies in the shadows. Representing the part of her people that refuse to conform to the rules set in place by the less potent, she operates outside of the law, following instead the self-made rules of her Coven.

Kirin (Romance Option, cryn). The order of The Aelesh is enveloped in mystery. Worshipping the world of the unknown, they have chosen to cast aside the Faith in favour of the Truth ā and in their eyes, the truth lies beyond that which mortals can comprehend and perceive with their senses. With the simple mask he insists on wearing, your only clue as to Kirinās true character lies in his voice and body language. Each sparse movement has a purpose, every phrase a veiled meaning. Heās vowed to express his beliefs by following in the footsteps of the Pentagons and to serve them in any way he can. In his opinion, this is currently best done by aiding you.
Kirin is quiet as a shadow and moves much like one, too, walking in and out of your life as he pleases. He is devoted to his beliefs and for all intents and purposes, he seems devoted to serve you, as well. He is practical but also idealistic when it comes to his faith and what he does for that faith. But the nature of his order is vague and difficult to grasp for someone not directly linked to them. Kirinās personality is hard to pin down since he seems to hide much of it beneath his purpose, just like how he hides his face behind his mask. He is calm, though; sometimes eerily so, and often finds amusement in situations where people might find such amusement distasteful.

First of all, I absolutely loved the demo of the game and can't wait to play it in full one day. I've always enjoyed those "pick your own ending" style books growing up, so I'm so glad I found this game. The writing and storytelling for multiple paths was very fun, and I liked the option to customise your character and their backstory.
While I was playing through, there were just a few minor errors, so I tried to go back and find them so I could let you know. I may have missed a few, but here are some that I noticed.
1. Near the beginning of the "treasure hoarders" backstory, there is a paragraph repeated at one point. The one that reads, "'Either way, we could've made good use of that 'costly stuff'..." appears two times in a row.
2. Farther down on that same page, in the text, there is a portion that reads, "</span>", which I didn't think was supposed to be included on the on screen text (I could be completely wrong, sorry)
3. During the portion where you are supposed to sign the contract, one option, "If that was a challenge, you weren't about to turn it down. You stubbornly kept signing with your false name." leads to a blank page with no text.
4. When you talk to Fri, after giving a false name instead of a made up one, he still refers to you with the real name he doesn't know.
5. When you are given a description about the grown up version of Muir, there is a segment that is repeated twice that reads something like, "He has grown tall and rangy, his body wrapped...".
The only other issue I had while playing was that there wasn't more of the adventure. I really enjoyed the demo and can't wait to read more. Please never stop creating works of art, this was so good. š«¶
I remember back when this game had like 5 ratings, it needs to be more than 1000! I'm serious when I said it's Scout level good, hardly any other if was this good of writing
Thanks again for another sweet comment, Jiba!
A fascinating game with lots of potential and I'm eagerly awaiting more of this story! I'm already in love with dear grumpy Muir, they're so cute!
One big thing I hope we get to do eventually is reclaim our name! I want my character's original name back dammit!
I'm not sure if there are others facing the same problem as I am, but for some reason when I click on an option, it just takes me to a blank page? I'm currently at the part where we can choose how to respond to Muir talking about how he wasn't that much of a charming person and whatever choice I make leads to the same blank page, so there is no way for me to progress onward
Im not sure if this is because this is because it's just a demo but I just wanted to check! :)

Yes this happened to me too
Also happened with "your unique"
Sorry about that! Both this and the "unique" options should work now!
I am in LOVE⤠it's such a great game and has soo soo much potential. Also, I am bessoted for cirern??? Like I never knew I might like depressed emo elves??
I'm so sorry, your comment was somehow flagged as spam and I didn't see it until now. I'm so happy you like the game and Cirern <3 Thank you so much!
Is anyone else having a problem with their progress being saved? I'm only on part two of the prologue. I've tried to save my progress on two different occasions and each time it wasn't saved. Does saving it to a disk have something to do with it?
I'm really sorry you're having trouble with the saves. I haven't tried saving to disk myself, but saving 'normally' (I can't think of a better word) works just fine for me when testing. Could you try saving that way and see if it works, if you haven't already?
Checked this out because I looked at the cover and went, is this Maedros? Outside of that, I really love this!
I had to google who Maedros is after reading this, haha. Cirern's look is actually mainly inspired by Dante Gabriel Rossetti's paintings (such as Lady Lilith). That's what I told the artist I commissioned for his original portrait, and I've used that commission as reference for the other artworks that depict him made by other artists :)
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts!
Estou apaixonada pela narrativa, os personagens e o mundo são muito bem desenvolvidos!!! Aguardo ansiosamente a continuação!
I think this story is amazing and I would LOVE to make a fan voice over if you would allow me
Thank you for the sweet comment! I'm not sure what a fan voice over is — do you mean something like an audiobook?
Ahhhh, just finished reading the demo for the first time. I love this story sooo, sooo much! Iām really excited for more! šš„¹
love the variety of choices you can make + stunning worldbuilding (my #1 priority is making cirern my father figure)
Hello! Just finished the demo and wanted to let you know that the profile seems to be missing the hair length and has "hair" repeated twice. Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about. I'm sorry to bother you with such a small thing, but I felt like I should let you know just in case
Thank you for letting me know! I'll take a look at that later :)
Ok I just want to point out that this truly makes you feel like you have nothing else
rarely do IF's cause emotion in me but damm did I feel things playing this, like, I choose the scavenger backstory and first, bonding with Viv and Jugg, then Ric and Fin, then for them to betray me, and for me to inigially hate Cicern but grow so attached to him because —what else did I have? I had no family, no "found" family, no friends, a cryn, like where else could I go? (Also this sort of made me confused when my character went to "escape" because I kept repeating to myself "no, I wanna be home >:(" )
Also very silly and stupid question but will be ever get to see the automaton again? Or at least have memories or flashbacks of it? I grew quite attached to it and miss it š
Hello, thank you for the kind comment and sorry that it's taken me so long to answer!
Feeling like you have nothing and a sense of isolation were some things I wanted to achieve with this part of the story. I'm really happy that it evoked such strong emotions in you <3
Regarding 'the escape': That's exactly why I added the option for the MC to run away to test Cirern rather than genuinely wanting to escape. I figured there were people who'd want to play an MC that would stay with him, but I didn't want them to have to skip that entire part of the chapter.
While I can't say whatās going to happen in the future, part I and II of the prologue arenāt isolated chapters; stuff that happens in them and some characters that appear are going to matter in some ways later on. More flashbacks are going to appear in future chapters as well!
PEAK!!!! Huge fan of the more morally sour choices you can make. The ui is gorgeous and the characters are unique and intriguing. Love it so far, hope it updates!!!
This is definitely one of the best stories ever š The plot and the characters are so good and well-written, im totally invested and completely immersed in it while reading that i even feel like im actually the MC š Looking forward to updates and playing more! This game is simply my cup of tea fr i love it so bad
i love this story so so much omg--it's one of my favorite IF's on here, the writing is absolutely wonderful, i love how much choice we get, and the characters are incredibly well-written.
something that i just wanted to point out is during cirern's first lecture in the scavenger route, one of the options is unclickable and looks like: [[āSomeone I knew...she seemed to have made a deal with those witches in the forest. Before you came."|Chap1treasquestionask]]
and when you click āDo you have any questions for me?ā something that looks like [Error: cannot find a closing tag for HTML <ul>] pops up, but you can still read the response.
can't wait for the next update!
Hi, thank you so much for the sweet comment! The unclickable error is one I unfortunately encounter a lot and it seems to have to do with the quotation marks or something like that; I'll make sure to fix it!
The other error should be fixed now.
So happy you like the story!
one thing i have to bring up, is when you pick elf and nomad as the background... it really is confusing with the childhood section. you would think something about the childs background and race would be mentioned at some point in the prologue but the supporting characters like the father and grandmother feel like they are humans. (which if youre an elf something should be there about being adopted or having an elf mother or elf culture or something). just food for thought.
Hi, thank you so much for the comment! I understand your point, since the nomadic background isn't focused on race like the aristocrat background is. That's mainly because the divide in the nomadic background isn't based on race, but on differing beliefs within the clan regarding its future, relation to forbidden magic and towards the crown. The aristocrat background is focused on race because elves hold the most power and is the most common and accepted race while humans have to fight to stay relevant, but in this case that's a struggle hugely tied to political power and influence. The MC's clan in the nomadic background has its own belief system, but it's not 'elven culture'; it's old beliefs that aren't really tied to any specific race. But it's something I could probably expand on - I'll keep your feedback in mind in case I think of some way of incorporating it in the nomadic background at a later date!
This was something. Something beautiful and it satisfied my world-building, lore thirsty side. I love the story so much, it piqued my interest and now when the demo ended, I'm looking forward for more (and more of Muir of course). There was so much you could learn, different perspectives, backgrounds, overall awesome. It feels so high quality and Its obviously carefully curated. Ahhhhhhh I'm so excited for more!!!!! I love Muir so much š„°.
Thank you so much for the kind comment <3 I'm really happy you enjoyed what's there so far!
I am enjoying this so far, but there are a couple of continuity errors that take me out of the story. I chose the Thief background and had a companion who was a Cryn and described her appearance , but the first time I meet Kirin, it says I have only read about them and have no idea what they look like.
Hi and thanks for your comment! Sorry to hear about the continuity error; could you please tell me whether this happens when the MC is a child during the "Escape" section with the cryn child or whether it happens in chapter 1 when you meet Kirin towards the end of the demo?
During the "Escape" part, there's a variable that says that you have only read about cryn if you play the aristocrat background and didn't choose to play as cryn yourself during character creation. It's possible that this variable is buggy and appears when you played the scavenger background too; I'm going to investigate and see whether that's the case and change it accordingly if so.
I can't recall mentioning Kirin being cryn in chapter 1 since he doesn't reveal his appearance, but there's a lot of text to keep track of and it's very possible I might have missed it!
EDIT: I got to this very late since I've taken a break from working on this game, but I looked into this further and changed some code. It should be fixed now :)
I tried to pick the dark theme but it looks like this. I'm sorry to bother if this is intended. Have a good day!
Hi! Thanks for reporting - it's no bother at all, though I'm aware of the issue :) it's not something I've gotten around to fix yet since other things have been taking priority. The original template had a dark mode which then turned out like thos when my friend was kind enough to redesign the template for me and make it into what it looks like now haha. I'm going to see if it can be fixed at a later date! Thanks a lot <3
Thank you and have a good day!
I really enjoyed and was intrigued by the prologue, just some minor typos and awkward flow (from variables I'd guess) here and there, I unfortunately didn't think to make note of where though, sorry!
The beginning of chapter 1 confused me however. I'm a little bit lost about what we're setting out to do, I'm not sure if I missed something but it does feel like I'm missing a bunch of context. At one point a curse is mentioned as if I was supposed to know about it but had no idea what it was talking about. There's also a point where my MC asks Muir what happened with the Garm and it just completely skips any response to that question.
I have some screenshots of some coding errors I came across but I apparently can't fit them all in this comment so I'll reply to this with them!
Sorry this was so long, this story is intriguing and I'm looking forward to more!
Hi! Thanks a lot for taking the time to send those screenshots and giving your feedback, it means a lot <3 I'll make sure to go through the screenshots soon and correct the mistakes there. Sorry in advance for the super long text; I wanted to explain thoroughly and properly!
As for the confusion you mentioned in chapter 1 - I understand where you're coming from. There might be instances where the transition isn't smooth enough because I actually wrote chapter 1 before writing any of the content present in prologue part I and II. That being said, I'm also deliberately keeping a lot of things vague since I want to reveal things bit by bit and letting you get used to the world instead of exposition dump an explanation for everything right away.
Although you get to play a bit of the MC's childhood, there's a 19 year time skip where the reader isn't really informed of what the MC has experienced during their time with Cirern and I want to delve into that bit by bit rather than all at once :) but I'm going to go over that part again! It's really helpful to know what is and isn't clear to readers since I already have all the information and it's difficult for me to determine that while proofreading. So thank you for that!
Can I ask you to specify what you meant by 'curse'? If you mean the part where the MC can't talk about certain things with Fri regarding their past, that's specified during the "Contract" part of the prologue if you say yes to knowing the terms of the contract.
And about the awkward transitions, that's a bug; there are quite a few variables involving the garm and Fri, and what Muir says differs, but the text where it says that he speaks and then doesn't say anything is a bug. I thought I had it fixed but I must have missed a variable there. Will look into that too!
Thank you so much for your feedback, I'm going to take it with me when I go back to editing chapter 1! And sorry again for the extremely long answer lmao ;;
Hi! Thank you for the thorough reply, and no worries about the length!
About the curse thing, that was the moment with Fri I was talking about so that must be it. I decided my MC wouldn't ask about the terms in the moment as a child (being already shy and now with fresh trauma), so I had no idea he couldn't talk about parts of his past.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my initial comments and reply!
Ohh! Okay, I definitely see the issue. I will make a note of adding something in chapter 1 for those who chose not to hear the terms of the contract to avoid confusion there.
And it's no problem at all, thank you again for bringing this to my attention <3
On iphone I canāt load a save from disk simply because I canāt find a load button.
Might be blocked by the iphone ui at the bottom of the screen?
I'm so sorry to hear that ): it sounds like it might be an issue with the iphone ui to me, yes. I've been testing the game on my phone and can see the load button just fine, but I have a different type of phone. Is there a way you could temporarily hide the ui bar and see if it works that way?
