HOW WE WATCH 80S MOVIES NOW

I came across a clip on Instagram from the 1983 movie Lady Is the Boss, one of those classic martial arts action comedies. Theres a scene where a group of teens on BMX bikes get into a fight with a gang of thugs, basically using their bikes as weapons. Its a wild mix of kung fu, bike tricks, jumps, spins, and hits using the BMX frame and even the wheels.

Watching it now, in 2026, feels completely different. Back in the 80s, my generation was between 10 and 20 years old. Stuff like this absolutely blew our minds. It didnt matter that it wasnt realistic. It didnt matter that the choreography was over the top. We had never seen anything like it.
There was no internet. Not even the concept of it. If you wanted visual fantasy, you went to the movies, rented a tape from the video store, or if you were lucky, caught it on TV. That was it.
For a bunch of kids, watching kung fu movies or over-the-top fight scenes was almost universal. We all loved that stuff.

So seeing a fight scene where they were doing BMX acrobatics and using the bikes mid-air as part of the combat it was like, Dude, this is insane. It wasnt believable, but it was new.

Now, though, watching it with adult eyes, everything shifts. You can tell the hits dont land. The villains fall in overly choreographed ways. The pacing feels theatrical. The fantasy is obvious. And instead of being impressed, you almost smile at how staged it all looks.
But that contrast is exactly what makes it interesting. Its not just about the scene its about how weve changed. Our expectations changed. Our access to content changed. The way we consume entertainment changed.

Back then, entertainment meant going to the video store, scanning the shelves, picking a movie like this and watching it over and over because thats what you had. Today we scroll past a hundred fight scenes in ten minutes. Weve seen everything. Or almost everything.
And maybe thats why scenes like this hit differently now not because theyre better or worse, but because were not the same audience anymore.
Im sharing the clip because its a perfect reminder of how perspective evolves. Same scene. Same absurd BMX kung fu chaos. Completely different eyes watching it.

18-0 IT'S COMING 💀

At this point, I honestly don't know what's more impressive about Ilia Topuria: the knockouts or how calmly he predicts them before they happen.

While other fighters try to stay cautious to avoid jinxing themselves, Topuria often seems perfectly happy to point out the exact floor of the building from which he's about to throw his opponent. And the worst part is that it's becoming harder and harder to argue with him.

This post brings together some of his most recent fights. A collection of fast finishes, perfectly timed shots, and bewildered expressions just before the referee decides we've all seen enough.

What started out as confidence has long since evolved into a serious problem for anyone who has to share a cage with him.

THE SPARRING SESSIONS OF ALEX PEREIRA

If you follow the world of mixed martial arts even a little, chances are you've come across a video of Alex Pereira. And if you don't know who he is, it's enough to say that he's been one of the most recognizable names in the UFC over the last few years.
Nicknamed "Poatan", Pereira was a champion in Glory Kickboxing across two different weight classes before making the jump to MMA. He later captured a UFC title as well, becoming champion in both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. A fighter best known for his knockout power and for always looking like he's thinking about absolutely nothing.

What's interesting is that, despite competing at the highest level, he's probably also the UFC fighter with the most sparring videos floating around social media. Every few days there's a new clip of him trading punches with training partners, amateurs, influencers, other fighters, or any brave soul willing to put on some gloves and give it a try.
And of course, that creates a false sense of confidence. Because the videos almost always start the same way. Pereira relaxed. Expressionless. Hands down. Letting the other guy work. Looking more like a buddy having fun at the gym than a professional fighter.
Until you remember you're standing in front of someone who's spent years making a living by hitting people far more effectively than the average person.

That's why there's an unwritten rule whenever an Alex Pereira sparring video shows up: don't do what he does, keep your guard up. He can get away with dropping his hands. You're not Pereira.

RANDOM FIGHTS VOL117

The idea of a world without violence sounds wonderful. And its probably one of the noblest goals we can pursue as a society.
The problem is that to completely eliminate violence, we would have to eliminate many other things first. We would have to eliminate fear. Ambition. Jealousy. Anger. Desperation. Greed. Fanaticism. Need. Even the instinct for survival.
Because violence is not some external disease infecting humanity. Violence is a consequence of what we are. An extraordinarily intelligent animal, capable of creating works of art, traveling to space, and developing vaccines that save millions of lives... but still an animal.

You only have to look at nature to understand it. Competition for resources, territory, power, or reproduction exists in practically every species. We have built laws, culture, education, and civilization to contain those impulses, and thanks to that, we live in the safest and most peaceful period in human history.

But containing something doesnt mean eliminating it. There will always be people willing to hurt others for money, ideology, revenge, desperation, or simply because their brain doesnt work the way it should.
Thats why the goal probably shouldnt be to eradicate violence. Thats impossible.
The real goal should be to reduce it, control it, and punish it when it appears.

Because aiming for a perfect world usually ends in frustration. Aim for a better world. That is within our reach.

DOUBLE KO

The bell rings, the fight starts, a clean shot lands, and one of the fighters immediately shuts down. That's it. Up to this point, everything still fits the usual MMA starter pack: people punching each other, referees jumping in to break things up, and someone trying to figure out what day it is and why giant lights are shining in their face.

The problem starts a few seconds later. Because while the body had already received the message that the fight was over, apparently one part of his brain was still convinced things were still going.
And right when the referee steps in to protect him and stop any more damage, the guy suddenly reacts, grabs onto him, and starts wrestling like he still thinks he's fighting his opponent.

And yeah... trying to reason with a half-unconscious MMA fighter doesn't exactly sound like recommended protocol. So the referee does the only thing he can do: take control of the situation.

And what happens next creates a stat almost impossible to repeat: this guy somehow managed to lose twice in the same fight.
