THE SPARRING SESSIONS OF ALEX PEREIRA

If you follow the world of mixed martial arts even a little, chances are you've come across a video of Alex Pereira. And if you don't know who he is, it's enough to say that he's been one of the most recognizable names in the UFC over the last few years.
Nicknamed "Poatan", Pereira was a champion in Glory Kickboxing across two different weight classes before making the jump to MMA. He later captured a UFC title as well, becoming champion in both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. A fighter best known for his knockout power and for always looking like he's thinking about absolutely nothing.

What's interesting is that, despite competing at the highest level, he's probably also the UFC fighter with the most sparring videos floating around social media. Every few days there's a new clip of him trading punches with training partners, amateurs, influencers, other fighters, or any brave soul willing to put on some gloves and give it a try.
And of course, that creates a false sense of confidence. Because the videos almost always start the same way. Pereira relaxed. Expressionless. Hands down. Letting the other guy work. Looking more like a buddy having fun at the gym than a professional fighter.
Until you remember you're standing in front of someone who's spent years making a living by hitting people far more effectively than the average person.

That's why there's an unwritten rule whenever an Alex Pereira sparring video shows up: don't do what he does, keep your guard up. He can get away with dropping his hands. You're not Pereira.
