Art Of The Fold - Buttonhole Binding - 2024 Artwork

2024 has come and gone... and since I had given myself a challenge to upload something to social media every day I ended up with a lot of artwork... so I thought I'd better bind it to keep it all together.

I recently saw a buttonhole binding - something I haven't made in several years... so thought it would be perfect to hold all my 2024 artwork not including Scribbled lives artwork - that's a different binding..

I adhered 2 pieces of 110# cream cardstock with a 1" strip for the spine. Created 2 more to give me 3 folios (12 pages). I created 7 more (total of 8 x 12 pages).

Trimmed and adhered artwork to the pages trying to keep it in date order... but that was impossible since some were small pieces of artwork so had several different dates on one page. c'est la vie...

The covers were made from regular cardboard from boxes and covered with a collage of various designs of cork fabric. I wanted a thick cover and was too lazy to pull out my sheets matte board or foam core. Inside of cover adhered a piece of the cream cardstock to keep it neat.

Bound with butterscotch 4ply waxed linen thread in Buttonhole
stitch.

Added a metal ornament to hold the title on the cover and book corners to save those edges...

Xmas Window Star Ornament

Another star type ornament.

Size: 4.5" sq
I pulled out some iridescent paper from my stash...

Cut 2 pieces 4.25"sq Folded in half diagonally, then the longest side folded in half and again the longest side folded in half. While everything is still folded (The open unfolded side to the right and closed folded section at the top), cut a triangular wedge from the open side (no folds) - for mine it was about 1/2" at the top folded area to the point of the triangle. Then cut 2 slits vertically about 3/8" apart to almost touching the folded top edge.

Glue the 2nd strip point to the center with a very small dot of glue. Do the other 3 strips.

Fold. cut and glue the 2nd piece of paper the same way. Place both pieces on top of each other (back to back) rotating one about 45ΒΊ so the points lay in the center of the one below. Glue together at the center. Add a gem on both sides.

Newsprint - Xmas Ornament

size: 2.5"dia x 3.5"

Created a template of half the shape I wanted from cardstock. 3"h x 1.25"w

Using a very old cheap outdated encyclopedia paper, folded in half and placed my template against the folded edge. traced the template, then  cut out (I folded 3 pages at a time since it's very thin paper). Cut 24 shapes.

Adhere one half to another half and glue from the folded edge to the outer edge in a  straight line approx. 1/2" down from the top, then at the mid point and then about 1/2" from the bottom.

Adhere the next half in straight lines from about the 1/2 from the top and 1/2" from the bottom. continue gluing in this sequence.

(Not sure why it's glued this way...)

Before gluing the last one to close the ornament, adhere a string down the spine for hanging, then glue the last fold together. I added the beads as decoration.

Toilet Roll Snowflake

size: 5"sq x 1/2" thk
More stuff inspired from Instagram

Used 3.5 toilet rolls... Squished the toilet roll flat and cut at 1/2" increments. Painted the large ones with silver acrylic paint, both sides. Adhered together at the center point.

Cut the next 3 strips in half at both ends, painted them gold. Adhere inside the silver loops.

Continue cutting the loops in half at both ends and painting in copper for the outside loop design.

I punched a small hole in my top loop and strung my cord adding a bead in the loop.

Xmas Ball Ornaments

I've been getting a lot of paper crafting images on Instagram and decided to play a bit...

The upper left image is from

Honeycomb ornament upper left ( image)
size: approx 2.5"w
Using 65# cardstock (white and a 2 toned pink scrapbook paper).

Cut 10 circles of white and 10 of pink 2.5" dia. I Used a Spellbinder's Nestabilities Standard Circles Large.

Since I used a 2 sided cardstock for one of my 10 circles I alternated the colors when assembling.

Fold all circles in half. Arrange in the order you will be gluing. Glue half of one circle to the half of the next circle. Repeat till all are glued together.

Now is the tricky part...
Alternate gluing a small line on the top of one folded half, press together to adhere then on the next section glue at the bottom folded half. Alternate gluing at the top of one and then the bottom of the next to get the honeycomb look.
String a thread through the center adding beads or knots to prevent string from slipping out. Adhere with a glue gun.

Christmas ornament
size: approx 2.75"w
Using 65# white cardstock adhered sticky glitter sheets in 2 colors. Cut 18 strips (9 of each color) approximately 3.5" long x 1/4"w. Cut a pointed end to both ends so there is less bulk when gluing down.

The center column is a cardboard cylinder made from  the glittered scraps approx 1.75" tall and about 10cm dia. with a top on both ends to adhere the strips to.

Adhere your strips to the bottom end spacing as best you can. Adhere a larger circle on the outside from the glitter cardstock. This is decorative to hide the ends of your strips.

Repeat to the top end. (as you can see mine are not spaced quite evenly...). Adhere another large circle. I forgot to put a hole and thread through that 1st circle so had to add the 2nd circle on top of it... I also used a glue gun in this area.

Paper Snowflake - Parchment Paper

I've been getting a lot of paper crafting images on Instagram and decided to play a bit... This one was on
IG: origami.studio.diy

Using parchment style paper and adding a gem to the center.

Cut a piece of paper (rectangular). Mine was 8.5 x 11". Accordion fold in half from the bottom of the 11" length, each half in half until you have 16 folds.

Open the folds. Fold in half horizontally (you have 8 folds showing) then fold vertically in half. Place a pencil dot at the mid point of the 4th fold line from the folded edge, then at about the 1/4 point from the top edge on the 6th fold and then at the half point on the edge of the last fold. Cut through all layers from the top of the folded edge to your 1st pencil point at the 1/2 mark on the 4th score line, then to the 1/4 point point and then to the outside edge.

Open completely and refold accordion style and fold that in half. Repeat with 3 more of these accordions. Adhere one half edge to the next accordion at the small half edge. Repeat till all four accordions are adhered.

Add a decorative gem or bauble and a hanging string.

I just knotted a piece of string and adhered it to the inside of the tall fold line.
